Gas Stations & Fueling in Madeira
Planning a trip to the North Coast or Porto Moniz? Don't get caught with an empty tank in the mountains.
The Golden Rule
Never let your tank drop below 25% if you are leaving the South Coast. There are NO fuel stations in the central mountains (Pico do Arieiro, Rabacal, Paúl da Serra).
How to Fuel Up
Fueling in Portugal is straightforward but may differ slightly from your home country:
- Pull up to the correct pump (check your fuel cap—"95" for petrol, "Diesel" for diesel).
- Fill your tank as needed. Most pumps in Madeira do not require pre-payment.
- Note your pump number.
- Enter the shop and pay the cashier. Both cash and international credit/debit cards are accepted.
Fill Up Early
While gas stations are common on the South Coast, they are sparse in the North and almost non-existent in the high mountains.
Fuel Types
Most rentals use '95 Unleaded' (Gasolina 95) or 'Diesel' (Gasóleo). Double check your fuel cap before filling!
Self-Service vs. Full
Most stations are self-service. You fill first, then go inside to the counter to pay. Use the pump number as reference.
Where to Find Gas Stations
- Funchal: Abundant. Stations like Galp, Repsol, and BP are everywhere along the VR1.
- South Coast: Accessible in all major towns (Ribeira Brava, Calheta, Machico).
- North Coast: Sparse. Stations are located in São Vicente and Porto Moniz. If you are between them, you are out of luck.
- Highlands: ZERO. Plan ahead!
Quick Fact
Most stations are open from 07:00 to 22:00. Funchal has several 24-hour stations.
Fuel prices are regulated and similar across all brands on the island.
