Route Overview

This route takes you through the heart of Madeira's mountains, offering spectacular views and access to some of the island's best hiking trails. Be prepared for steep roads and hairpin turns as you navigate through Madeira's most dramatic mountain landscapes.

• Fill your fuel tank before heading into the mountains
• Bring warm clothing as temperatures are significantly cooler at high altitude

Road Conditions

Roads to Pico do Arieiro are generally well-maintained but narrow with steep drop-offs in places. The descent to Curral das Freiras features numerous switchbacks and requires careful driving.

Tunnel sections can be narrow with limited lighting. Adjust your speed accordingly and be prepared for temperature changes when emerging from tunnels at high altitude.

Weather Warning: Mountain areas are frequently covered in low cloud, drastically reducing visibility. Check forecasts before setting out and consider postponing if heavy fog or rain is predicted.
